Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity

I am sending this to you to help those who have left fundamentalist churches that preach damnation, hatred, fear and “you’re not a Christian if you don’t believe like me.”  Many have turned against the church and never came back, or just ran away from strict preachers, parents, teachers, etc. and never looked back to find a loving, caring church, group, club, etc.  I like a church sign down the road from me that states:
“We Welcome Sinners and Backsliders Like Us.”  You’ll find some good ideas from the summary and the reviews shared from others who have had a similar experience.-mackie

The time is past, says Bruce Bawer, when denominational names and other traditional labels provided an accurate reflection of Christian America’s religious beliefs and practices. The meaningful distinction today is not between Protestant and Catholic, or Baptist and Episcopalian, but rather between “legalistic” and “nonlegalistic” religion, between the Church of Law and the Church of Love. On one side is the fundamentalist right, which draws a sharp distinction between “saved” and “unsaved” and worships a God of wrath and judgment; on the other are more mainstream Christians who view all humankind as children of a loving God who calls them to break down barriers of hate, prejudice, and distrust.
Pointing out that the supposedly “traditional” beliefs of American fundamentalism–about which most mainstream Christians, clergy included, know shockingly little–are in fact of relatively recent origin, are distinctively American in many ways, and are dramatically at odds with the values that Jesus actually spread, Bawer fascinatingly demonstrates the way in which these beliefs have increasingly come to supplant genuinely fundamental Christian tenets in the American church and to become synonymous with Christianity in the minds of many people.
Stealing Jesus is the ringing testament of a man who is equally disturbed by the notion of an America without Christianity and the notion of an American Christianity without love and compassion.

OPEN MIND OF WONDER or CLOSED MIND OF BELIEF?

WHICH IS BETTER: OPEN MIND OF WONDER, OR CLOSED MIND OF BELIEF?

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

10 GREAT QUOTES FROM JESUS…..

WHETHER YOU BELIEVE JESUS WAS JUST HUMAN OR HUMAN AND DIVINE, Most believe that he was one of the greatest men that ever lived and follow his teachings. HE HAD (has) a great sense of humor. Enjoy! -mackie

10 GREAT QUOTES FROM JESUS OF NAZARETH.
Submitted by Ross Kendall on Mon, 21/05/2007 – 11:36pm.

Here you will find 10 sayings of Jesus that I have collected together. Finding quotable passages from Jesus was not that easy, as most of what is recorded of what he said (in the gospel books: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) are either metaphorical stories, or Jesus responding to particular questions that had been put to him. Neither work very well when taken out of context.

Of the more direct teachings of Jesus, most of them are contained in what is known as the sermon on the mount, which is a veritable goldmine of counter-cultural wisdom.

1. Love Your Enemies!

OK, you have to admit this is a pretty radical concept…

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? (Matthew 5:43-47)

2. Don’t Worry About The Future

Sometimes insightful sayings seem obvious once you hear them – I think that is the case here. Live in the moment you’re in!

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. (Matthew 6:34)

3. How To Treat Others

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)

4. The Most Important Commandment

“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:36-40)

5. Spiritual Greatness

In the topsy-turvy world of the Kingdom of God it seems the usual understanding of things is reversed. Here is yet another example:

“You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45)

6. Gaining The World, Losing Your Soul

Here Jesus highlights that the eternal and spiritual dimension is more important than the temporal physical one. Those who choose to follow His teaching will make physical sacrifices for spiritual rewards.

Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:34-38)

7. The Kingdom Of God Is Not Physical

Christian faith should not be militant, things like the crusades were not in line with what Jesus taught, or even the concept of christendom. He also taught that the Kingdom of God was in the hearts of men.

The statement below was said in response to questioning in his trial before the roman govenor.

“My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36)

SEARCHING FOR TRUTH RESOLVES CONFLICTS……

The Big Bang itself is a scientific theory, and as such stands or falls by its agreement with observations.[2] But as a theory which addresses the origins of reality it carries theological implications regarding the concept of creation ex nihilo (a Latin phrase meaning “out of nothing”).[3][4][5] In addition, many theologians and physicists have viewed the Big Bang as implicating theism;[6][7] a popular philosophical argument for the existence of God known as the Kalām cosmological argument rests in the concepts of the Big Bang.[8][9] In the 1920s and 1930s almost every major cosmologist preferred an eternal steady state Universe, and several complained that the beginning of time implied by the Big Bang imported religious concepts into physics; this objection was later repeated by supporters of the steady state theory,[10] who rejected the implication that the universe had a beginning.[11][12]

Pope Pius XIIdeclared, at the November 22, 1951, opening meeting of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, that the Big Bang theory does not conflict with the Catholic concept of creation.[13][14] Conservative ProtestantChristian denominationshave also welcomed the Big Bang theory as supporting a historical interpretation of the doctrine of creation.[15]

JESUS’ CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE…

THE CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE OF JESUS: Creating a whip from some cords, “he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. But he said to those who sold doves, ‘Get these out of here! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!’[Jn 2:13-16]”

I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians.  Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.  ~Mahatma Gandhi
The unique impression of Jesus upon mankind – whose name is not so much written as ploughed into the history of the world – is proof of the subtle virtue of this infusion.  Jesus belonged to the race of prophets.  He saw with open eyes the mystery of the soul.  One man was true to what is in you and me.  He, as I think, is the only soul in history who has appreciated the worth of man…. He takes men out of time and makes them feel eternity.  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

‘I had some business on the North Shore one morning last month, and decided to go a bit earlier to watch the waves and shoot some pics. As it always happens, the surf the day before was epic, with a Hawaiian-scale 10′-12′ WNW swell firing up the outer reefs. I’d heard that Pipeline was in all-time early season form. But this day, a new and increasing N swell was competing for space with the declining westerly component, making for huge, but gnarly and crossed up surf. The trades were blowing hard side offshore, making for deep rib-like chop across the giant wave faces. Every break from Laniakea to Uppers were just washed out whitewater cauldrons. “Boy,” I thought to myself, “I’m glad I didn’t bring my board today. You’d never catch me out there!”‘ (#1)

“I’m a pretty safe driver. I’m a safe driver for a lot of reasons. One reason is that I hate the idea of getting a ticket. I’ve gotten pulled over for speeding before, and it sucks. It’s expensive. It’s a pain. You know that feeling you get when you drive past a squad car going a little over the speed limit, and then you look in your rear view mirror, hoping it doesn’t pull out? I hate that feeling. This, combined with the simple fact that I don’t want to die, is the reason I drive safely. I get passed a lot on the interstate……..The Bible can be interpreted a lot of ways. With any given issue, people of faith can go to the same Bible, pray to the same God, seek out the same Holy Spirit, and come up with very different answers. Take any issue: homosexuality, immigration, the treatment of the poor, abortion, gender roles, warfare, capital punishment, gun rights, euthanasia, the environment, education, etc. and people of faith will come to very difficult conclusions.

Some try to group these things into neat little packages like liberal and conservative. I’m not a fan of those labels, or of any labels really. I think most people are more complicated than our labels. I know that the world is.” (#2)

“If something smells fishy it probably is. You should make a habit of simply choosing the ethical high road if you have any doubt in the matter. Don’t wait. Do it quickly before you talk yourself out of it. How much mental and emotional energy do you spend in mind games and moral debates when you should have just said “no” in the first place?” (#3)

MISTREATMENT OF WOMEN IN THE BIBLE

Which is more correct: “THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD?”  or “THE GOD OF THE BIBLE?” Even more exact:
“THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT?” or “THE GOD OF THE NEW  TESTAMENT?”
Even deeper:
“THE GOD OF LAW?” or “THE GOD OF LOVE?”
Is it better to tell people what to believe? or Ask them if they would like to share with you what they believe?
I’m almost done.  Everything you believe is your decision.  No one else.  I will leave you with a couple of statements to consider, if you want.
When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit of knowledge of Good and Evil… Who got the harshest of punishment? Eve! Adam’s punishment was that his herbs would sprout thorns and he would get to rule over Eve, is that really a punishment? Then Eve got pain in childbirth, pain in conception… and became a servant of sorts to Adam. Not to mention the official punishment for Adam was for listening to his wife. (Genesis 3:16-17) #1
The God of the Bible decrees that woman must submit to the dominance of man.
“The social and legal position of an Israelite wife was inferior to the position a wife occupied in the great countries round about… all the texts show that Israelites wanted mainly sons to perpetuate the family line and fortune, and to preserve the ancestral inheritance… A husband could divorce his wife; women on the other hand could not ask for divorce.. #2

THE LONG VIEW OF “WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT…”

Most people think that we never believe everything one person states; but through reading, listening, meditating, etc. from many we begin to sense a ring of truth as a whole.  The following comes the closest for me to what it’s really all about. -mackie (source cited below).
“Some day, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity,
we will harness for God, the energies of love. And then,
for the second time in the history of the world,
man will have discovered fire.”
For me there is something mesmerizing about these words of the scientist/philosopher and theologian, Teilhard De Chardin. As a scientist of the 20th. Century, he exults in the achievements of science but he points to a greater energy, stronger than nuclear power, greater than anything we have yet been able to tap. He says, “Just wait. We haven’t seen anything yet. Just wait until the day comes when we harness the energy of love — then we will, for the second time in the history of the world, discovered fire. That’s pretty powerful stuff.
But wait a second. We already know all about love, don’t we? We know exactly what it looks like. Love leaps out at us when we see a mother caressing her newborn; in the way a newlywed couple gaze at one another, in the silent vigil of an old man at the deathbed of his wife. We witness love in the self-sacrifice of a Mother Teresa and in the way people give of themselves and their resources to alleviate the suffering of people in impoverished countries. Love is what makes Moms and Dads put away their savings so that their kids can go to college. Love makes a perfect stranger risk his own life to save the life of a child. It is the glue of long lasting marriages. A silent presence at the birth of a child. Love makes a child pick up a fallen sparrow and try to nurse it back to health. So what does De Chardin mean when he says “Some day we will harness for God the energies of love?”
