A BETTER UNDERSTAND OF THE STORY OF JESUS…

Many Christian preachers, teachers and members believe that the story of Jesus WAS CLOSED, SEALED AND DELIVERED 2000 YRS AGO IN THE BIBLE.  The following shares the latest insights on the story of Jesus for those who are not religious or do not understand. -mackie

 (quoted)

“Most Christians seem to assume that the details of their faith system dropped out of heaven in a fully developed form. Nothing could be further from the truth.

 The creeds began as baptismal formulas in the 3rd century and did not receive the shape we now recognize until the 4th century. Doctrines like the Trinity and Incarnation were still being formed in the 5th century.

 Moving closer to the life of Jesus, scholars now suggest that miracles were added to the Jesus story only in the 7th and 8th decades of the Christian era. The Virgin birth and the suggestion that resurrection meant physical resuscitation are products of the 9th decade, and the account of Jesus’ ascension enters the tradition only in the 10th decade. Perhaps the biggest gap in our knowledge of Jesus, however, occurs in those years between 30 C.E. when Jesus’ earthly life came to an end and 70 C.E. when gospels began to achieve written form. Today, by lining up the gospels in chronological order with Mark first (ca. 70 C.E.), then Matthew (ca. 80 C.E.), Luke (ca 90 C.E.) and finally John (ca 100 C.E.), we can see how the miraculous was heightened; the details become more graphic and supernatural activity more pronounced.

 If the story could grow as dramatically as it did from 70-100 C.E., is it not reasonable to assume that it also grew from 30-70 C.E.? Yet with no written sources, entering that time of oral transmission is a problem.

 For the past year that forty-year oral phase of Christian history has been the primary focus of my study. In a series of columns not necessarily on successive weeks, but as a theme to which I will return often during the next six months, I want to begin to share this study with my audience under the general topic of “Jesus for the Non-Religious.”

Erik Erikson‘s 8 Stages of PsychosocialDevelopment

Stage 8: Maturity

Age: Late Adulthood — 65 years to death

Conflict: Integrity vs. Despair

Important Event: Reflection on
and acceptance of one’s life

Description:

The most important event at this stage is coming to accept one’s whole lifeand reflecting on that life in a positive manner. According to Erikson,achieving a sense of integrity means fully accepting oneself and coming to termswith the death. Accepting responsibility for your life and being able to undothe past and achieve satisfaction with self is essential. The inability to dothis results in a feeling of despair.

Elements for a positive outcome:

The adult feels a sense of fulfillment about life and accepts death as anunavoidable reality.

Elements for a negative outcome:

Individuals who are unable to obtain a feeling of fulfillment andcompleteness will despair and fear death.

Examples:

An aged person may find it necessary to reflect and analyze what they haveaccumulated throughout life and decide what offspring will receive from themupon death.

Rumors and hearsay are not accepted in Court. Which is closer to the truth:
“I feel like…”, “I think…” or
“I HAVE GONE TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE AND KNOW IT IS TRUE?”
Self-deception: denying the relevance or importance of opposing evidence and logical argument.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED AS YOU WANDER?

REMEMBER THAT FAVORITE CAROL?  (For words and music click on:

AS MANY SEEKERS OF THE TRUTH OF OLD I WONDER AS I WANDER.  Every new discovery, invention, medical cure, spiritual or human progression, understanding, solving of problem, etc., has come about from those who have WONDERED AS THEY WANDER (a being open to all ideas as we travel through life).

WHO OR WHATEVER CAUSED OR CREATED THE UNIVERSE AND OUR POSSIBILITY TO BE BORN AND LIVE CAN ONLY BE UNDERSTOOD OR RELATED TO  BY OUR WANDERING AND WONDERING, DON’T YOU THINK?

++++++++++++++++++

So, as I WONDER AS I WANDER through life I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY QUESTIONS (not answers) WITH YOU, OK?  LIKE JESUS WHO, AFTER LIVING A LIFE COMMITTED TO THE GOD OF HIS UNDERSTANDING, WONDERED ON THE CROSS:

“My God (father, daddy)! Why have you forsaken me?”

+++++++++++++++++++

IF WE ARE TO FIND THE ULTIMATE TRUTH DON’T WE, AS JESUS DID IN HUMAN FORM,  HAVE TO WONDER AS WE WANDER?  THE MOMENT WE THINK WE HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT WE STOP THE WONDER, RIGHT?

More later.
